Big Five Safaris, Scenic Lakes & Rwanda’s Only Savannah Park
Located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah wildlife park and a must-visit for classic safari lovers. Once heavily impacted by poaching and population pressure, the park has undergone one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation turnarounds — led by the collaboration between the Rwandan government and African Parks.
Today, Akagera is home to the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses — along with large populations of zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of antelope species such as topi, impala, and eland.
What makes Akagera truly unique is the diverse landscape: rolling grasslands, woodlands, swampy marshes, and a string of serene lakes, including Lake Ihema, which hosts spectacular boat safaris. This combination of ecosystems supports over 500 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers
